Yuanshan Park Area of Taipei Expo Park

This guide to the Yuanshan Park area of Taipei Expo Park follows the site's life as Maruyama Zoo, opened by a settler known only as Oe and soon taken over by the Japanese colonial government as Taiwan's first public zoo. For most of its decades the zoo was ordinary: families on Sunday outings, students on graduation trips, monkeys and deer behind wire fences, until the war years changed what the grounds were used for.
