Qingtiangang Grassland

This guide to Qingtiangang Grassland in Taipei opens with a mystery: in the winter of 2020, the free-roaming water buffalo grazing this volcanic plateau began dying, three in October and about thirty more the following month. These buffalo are descendants of animals left here decades ago after Japanese colonial officials fenced the lava plateau for grazing in the 1930s. After a visitor was gored in 2018, park officials fenced off part of the grassland to separate buffalo from people.
