The Pink City of the Maharajas
Jaipur is where Rajasthan turns theatrical. Founded in 1727 by the astronomer-king Sawai Jai Singh II, it was one of India's earliest planned cities — laid out on a precise grid of broad avenues by architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya following ancient Vastu principles. In 1876 the old town was painted a warm terracotta pink to welcome the Prince of Wales, and the color stuck: by law, the walled city keeps its rosy glow to this day, a legacy that helped earn Jaipur UNESCO World Heritage status in 2019. Palaces, forts, and a garden of stars
