Dormant-looking volcanic peak with silvergrass slopes, where scientists detected a periodic underground tremor likened to a heartbeat.
For most of the twentieth century, everyone agreed this Taipei peak's volcanic fire had gone out thousands of years ago. This guide follows a team from Academia Sinica, led by scientist Lin Cheng-horng, who around 2019 went looking underneath the summit anyway. It traces what their instruments found buried beneath northern Taiwan, and the strange repeating rhythm they kept picking up at a nearby spot called Dayoukeng. Listen for Lin's own name for that rhythm as you take in the silver grass and arrow bamboo underfoot.
