Shida Night Market

This guide to Shida Night Market in Taipei follows a fight between residents and vendors that began in October 2011, when neighbors behind the market formed a self-rescue association against frying oil, noise and crowds. The market had grown from illegal hawker stalls in the 1960s into one of the city's liveliest strips by the 1990s. By 2012 officials invoked an old zoning law requiring restaurants to sit on lanes at least eight meters wide, shutting a whole strip of stalls overnight.
