This guide to the Memorial Lyceum Museum in Saint Petersburg opens in December 1825, days after the failed uprising against the tsar, with a young diplomat knocking on a friend's door to offer him a dangerous way out. It reaches back to 1811, when fourteen boys, among them a future poet and the friend from that knock, moved into narrow rooms along the same corridor for six years of schooling here. Along that hallway lived Anton Delvig, and Wilhelm Kuchelbecker, who would later stand against the tsar's guns himself. Room number fourteen, barely large enough for a bed and a desk, sits just above where you are standing.
