Chiado

This guide to Chiado in Lisbon opens before dawn on August 25, 1988, when fire broke out at the Grandella department store and swept through the neighborhood, touching the literary quarter around Cafe A Brasileira and its statue of poet Fernando Pessoa. It follows the decade-long rebuilding effort the city launched in 1989, led by an architect who would later win the Pritzker Prize. A neighborhood that survived the 1755 earthquake had to rebuild again.
