Las Wolski

This guide to Las Wolski in Kraków opens a month after Marshal Józef Piłsudski's death in 1935, when thousands of Poles began climbing Sowiniec Hill carrying small bags of soil. It follows the legionnaires, schoolchildren and veterans who gathered earth from battlefields and execution sites where Poland's independence had been fought for, and traces the mound they built between 1934 and 1937 through wartime occupation and decades of communist-era neglect.
