Wanda Mound

This guide tells the legend behind Wanda Mound on the banks of the Vistula in Kraków, the story of Wanda, daughter of the city's legendary founder Krakus, and the German warlord Rytygier who marched on her rather than accept her refusal to marry him. It follows what the oldest chronicles say happened when his army faced her, and why grieving Kraków is said to have raised this fourteen-meter earthen mound around the seventh or eighth century, later crowned with a marble eagle by painter Jan Matejko. Along the way it asks what archaeologists went looking for when they finally opened the hill.
