Wertheimpark

This guide to Wertheimpark in Amsterdam traces the life of Abraham Carel Wertheim, a Jewish banker who rebuilt Amsterdam's theatres and charities before the park was named for him in 1898, and the Nazi occupation's decision in 1942 to erase his name from it. From there it turns to 1993, when artist Jan Wolkers installed a memorial of shattered mirrors here to mark the fate of Dutch Jews under the occupation. Look for the granite fountain at the park's heart, placed there in Wertheim's honor long before the mirrors arrived.
