Spui

This guide to Spui in Amsterdam centers on Het Lieverdje, the bronze street-boy statue unveiled here in 1960 and funded, oddly, by a cigarette company. It follows Robert Jasper Grootveld, a former window-cleaner who turned up at the statue every Saturday midnight from 1964 onward to chant, smoke and stage what he called a happening, drawing crowds of hundreds. Stand at the foot of the little statue as you listen, where the smoke and the chanting once filled the square.
