Vondelpark

This guide to Vondelpark in Amsterdam opens in 1873, when brewing magnate Gerard Adriaan Heineken was denied permission to open a bar inside the park and built one just outside its gates instead, at the address now known as Vondelstraat 41. You'll hear how the father-and-son landscape architects Jan David and Louis Paul Zocher shaped the park's English-style lawns, paths and lake after it opened in 1865. A bronze statue of the poet Joost van den Vondel, added two years later, is what eventually gave the park its name.
