Gurney Drive Hawker Center

This guide to Gurney Drive Hawker Center in Penang Island opens on October 6, 1951, when Sir Henry Gurney, the British High Commissioner in Malaya, was riding through a jungle curve toward a hill-station meeting with his wife and private secretary. It follows what he did in the seconds after guerrillas of the Malayan Communist Party opened fire on the convoy, and how the seafront road was renamed in his honor the following year. This hawker centre has fed the neighborhood since the early 1970s, moving a few times before settling here.
