Campbell Street Market

This guide starts in 1901, when workmen clearing an old Malay burial ground at Campbell and Carnarvon Streets to build a covered market dig up grave after grave, until they reach one they cannot move. It follows the market that rose in brick and iron around that single holdout grave, now George Town's oldest working market building. Look for the small enclosed chamber walled in among the poultry stalls, marking where the grave still sits.
