Nyayo Monument

This guide to the Nyayo Monument in Nairobi tells how President Daniel arap Moi raised a marble tower to himself in nineteen eighty-eight, topped with a bronze cast of his own hand gripping the constitution, paid for partly through deductions from civil servants' salaries. It follows opposition organiser Raila Odinga, who in nineteen ninety-two promised a crowd that this very monument would come down the moment his party took power. The tower once appeared on the new hundred-shilling note, and ten visiting heads of state attended an unveiling that alone cost roughly three hundred million shillings.
