Dedan Kimathi Statue
PR7F+XMP, Kimathi St, Nairobi
Bronze freedom-fighter figure gripping rifle and dagger, cast by university art students on a downtown traffic island.
This guide to the Dedan Kimathi Statue in Nairobi follows the nearly four-year process of casting a bronze memorial to a man the colonial government once branded a terrorist. It traces Kimathi's leadership of the Mau Mau fighters, his capture in the Aberdares and 1957 execution, and the decades after independence when his own country kept the Mau Mau ban on its books. The statue itself was modelled and cast by art students from Kenyatta University's Department of Fine Art, working the metal smooth by hand.
