Jeevanjee Gardens

This guide to Jeevanjee Gardens in Nairobi opens at the bronze bust of Alibhai Mulla Jeevanjee, once said to own the greater part of the town outright. It follows how he built that fortune supplying nearly thirty-two thousand contracted workers from Punjab to lay the Uganda Railway, then used the profits to buy land and construction contracts across the growing city. In 1906 he gave five acres of that land away for free, open to people of every race at a time when that itself was rare.
