Viking Ship Museum

This guide to the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde traces five vessels found in 1962 at the bottom of Roskilde Fjord, deliberately sunk there rather than wrecked by accident. It follows one ship, later named Skuldelev Two, from its origins as a magnificent longship built around 1042 for a Viking chieftain to its stripped-down end alongside a cargo ship, a coastal trader, a warship and a fishing boat. Early archaeologists who first found the tangled timbers briefly miscounted six vessels instead of the true five.
