Church of St. Vitus

This guide to the Church of St. Vitus in Cesky Krumlov starts with a shrine once paid for entirely in beer money: a side altar built by the town's brewers' guild, sharing this Gothic hall church with altars raised by tailors, butchers, and blacksmiths. It traces the building back to Peter the First of Rosenberg breaking ground in the early 1300s, through master builder Jan Stanek's 1407 contract and the Hussite wars, to its 1439 consecration with vaulting copied from Prague's own St. Vitus. Brewers had been at work in Krumlov since the 1300s, long enough to fund an altar of their own.
