This guide to the Sítio Roberto Burle Marx in Rio de Janeiro follows the painter who grew ashamed that a German greenhouse taught him more about Brazilian plants than his own country ever had. It traces his expeditions into the Brazilian interior through the 1930s, racing bulldozers and dam projects to collect species before they vanished, and the more than fifty plants that now carry his name. In 1949 he bought this old colonial estate, once called Santo Antonio da Bica, and insisted on calling it a laboratory, never a garden.
