This guide to Cascatinha Taunay in Rio de Janeiro's Tijuca forest opens with an 1861 order from Emperor Dom Pedro II to replant a mountain that coffee planters had stripped bare. It follows Major Manoel Gomes Archer and six enslaved workers, Constantino, Eleuterio, Leopoldo, Manuel, Maria and Mateus, whose names he recorded as they planted over one hundred thousand seedlings by hand. The waterfall itself took its name from the painter Nicolas Antoine Taunay, who built a house nearby in 1817 and hosted the imperial court beside the falling water.
