Brussels Stock Exchange

This guide to the Brussels Stock Exchange traces a penniless young sculptor who climbed the scaffolding here in the 1870s to carve four caryatids above the entrance — decades before he'd become known as Auguste Rodin. It follows architect Léon Suys' grand building from 1868, through a fire that tore through its trading floor in 1990, to the day in 1996 when the shouting of stockbrokers stopped for good. Look up at the same carvings that once watched over frantic trading, still holding their place above the entrance.
