Salzburg Museum

Mozartpl. 1, 5020 Salzburg

Circular panorama museum inside a princely residence, its rooftop city view painted rooftop by rooftop.

This guide to Salzburg Museum follows Johann Michael Sattler, a painter who climbed the ramparts of Hohensalzburg Fortress again and again between 1825 and 1829 to capture every window, chimney and roofline of the city below. Commissioned by Emperor Franz the First for a simple view of Salzburg, Sattler produced something far more obsessive, unveiled in a tent near today's Makartplatz on Easter Sunday 1829, which made him an honorary citizen on the spot. He then rolled up his life's work, loaded his family onto a boat, and set off to unroll it in city after city across Europe.
