Museum der Moderne

This guide to Museum der Moderne in Salzburg opens on the Grand Cafe Winkler, hotelier Hermann Winkler's pleasure palace that drew crowds to this clifftop spot on its opening night in 1946, with a restaurant, a concert hall and a dance floor famous enough to catch a film crew's eye for The Sound of Music. Through the 1970s the orchestra gave way to a croupier, and by 1977 the room had become the Salzburg Casino, its late nights measured in chips rather than waltzes. The casino ran until 1993, when it packed up and moved to a palace outside town.
