Sci-Bono Discovery Centre

This guide to the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre traces the building's earlier life as a workshop powering Johannesburg's electric trams in the early nineteen-hundreds, abandoned for decades after the tram industry collapsed. You'll hear how 1990s plans to reimagine Newtown as a cultural precinct saved it from demolition, and how in 2004 the Gauteng Department of Education and private backers turned the old workshop into a hands-on science space while keeping its iron trusses and brick walls.
