Johannesburg Art Gallery

This guide to the Johannesburg Art Gallery starts on May 7th, 1915, when Irish art dealer Hugh Lane died in the sinking of the Lusitania, just months before the building he had helped fill with art opened without ceremony. It follows Florence Phillips, wife of a mining magnate who dreamed of bringing world-class paintings to a gold rush city, and architect Edwin Lutyens, who designed the gallery the same year he began work on New Delhi. Inside once hung Monet, Picasso and Rodin, alongside the finest South African painters.
