Tamkang University

This guide to Tamkang University in Taipei begins in 1950, when wartime chaos pushed thousands of students out of mainland China with their studies cut off mid-sentence. It follows a father and son who opened a two-year English college inside their own house on Cheng Li Street, with no campus and no dormitory, just a living room and a handful of teachers. The ridge the school later moved onto is named Five-Tiger Hill, for a mountain range behind it shaped like a crouching tiger's spine.
