Kamieniołom Libana

This guide to the Liban quarry in Kraków opens on July 22, 1944, the day guards prepared to shut down the penal labor camp that had ground prisoners through two brutal years quarrying limestone here. It traces the roughly two thousand Polish and Ukrainian prisoners who passed through between 1942 and 1944, then reaches back to 1873, when Jewish businessman Bernard Liban first opened the pit as a limestone works that supplied much of the city's building stone. Look down at the path underfoot as you listen: it isn't original to either era.
