Murales de la Secretaría de Educación Pública

This guide walks the courtyard murals Diego Rivera painted at Mexico City's Secretaría de Educación Pública building in the 1920s, after his return from the Soviet Union reshaped his politics and his brushwork. It follows his running feud with the poet Salvador Novo, whom Rivera mocked on the walls and who struck back with a cattle-metaphor poem called La Diegada, and it points out the real faces hidden in the crowds: Tina Modotti, David Alfaro Siqueiros, a young Frida Kahlo, and the activist Julio Antonio Mella. Look for the red banner of lyrics above the Ballad of the Revolution panels along the upper corridor.
