Monument to the Revolution

This guide to the Monument to the Revolution in Mexico City opens with President Porfirio Diaz laying the first stone of a legislative palace in 1910, designed by French architect Emile Benard, and abandoned mid-construction when the revolution he tried to dodge swept him from power. It follows the rusting iron skeleton that sat for two decades, and the architect Carlos Obregon Santacilia, who pitched keeping the frame and wrapping it in stone and copper. Five revolutionary leaders, among them Pancho Villa, are buried inside its four legs.
