Estanquillo Museum

This guide to the Estanquillo Museum in Mexico City follows the tradition of the calavera, the satirical skull Mexican newspaper illustrators began drawing in the 1880s, and the writer Carlos Monsivais, who spent thirty years gathering calendars, toys, lottery tickets and calaveras into this former jewelry-shop building. It traces Jose Guadalupe Posada's 1913 print the Calavera Garbancera, later renamed La Catrina, and the building's earlier lives as a bank, a nightclub and a government office.
