Gueliz

This guide to Gueliz in Marrakesh opens in 1912, when General Hubert Lyautey, running the new French protectorate, made an unusual call: build the new French quarter beside the old medina rather than over it, breaking with colonial practice elsewhere. It follows planner Henri Prost as he lays out wide avenues on a hill called Jbel Gueliz, a name that turns out to echo Igiliz, the mountain where a religious reform movement was born eight centuries earlier.
