Church of Holy Martyrs

This guide to the Church of Holy Martyrs in Marrakesh opens in 1219, when the young friar Berard of Carbio climbed onto a cart in the marketplace and kept preaching after the sultan ordered him to stop. He and four companions, sent from Assisi by Francis himself, had already been expelled from Morocco once and returned anyway, refusing every chance to recant before the sultan Yusuf al-Mustansir. Step inside and find the small chapel to a later friar, John of Prado, martyred here in 1631, a reminder that the five men who gave the church its name were only the first.
