L'Atelier 21

This guide to L'Atelier 21 in Casablanca follows painter Mahi Binebine back to the doorway where he opened this gallery in two thousand eight with his own paintings and sculpture. It traces the weight he carried into that opening: his older brother Aziz's eighteen years inside the secret desert prison of Tazmamart after a failed coup against King Hassan the Second, and the bound, fragmented bodies that keep surfacing in Mahi's work made afterward in Paris and New York. It asks why, years later, he chose this same room again.
