Myeondong Shopping Street

This guide to Myeondong Shopping Street in Seoul returns to June 10, 1987, when riot police fired tear gas down this street and students ran uphill toward Myeongdong Cathedral, fleeing after the death of a student named Park Jong-chul in police custody months earlier. It follows the cardinal who stood between soldiers and the students sheltering inside, and the standoff that held for six days above where the shops now stand.
