Kukje Gallery

This guide to Kukje Gallery in Seoul traces the woman who built it from nothing, Lee Hyun-sook, who opened the gallery in 1982 when the city had almost no market for contemporary art and began by bringing Western names like Alexander Calder and Louise Bourgeois to Korean audiences. It follows how she later turned that instinct around, staging a 2015 Venice Biennale exhibition of Korean painters working in the style called dansaekhwa.
