Seongsan Ilchulbong in Jeju is a volcanic cone born some five thousand years ago when magma erupting under the sea burst into steam and ash, eventually standing above the water as its own island before sand and soil linked it to Jeju. At its grassy summit sits a wide crater once farmed by locals. Below, at the port of Seongsanpo, the guide turns to the haenyeo, Jeju's free-diving women, and the whistling breath they release each time they surface.
