Jeju Haenyeo Museum

This guide to the Jeju Haenyeo Museum traces the culture of Jeju's free-diving sea women, honored by UNESCO in 2016 for a tradition built on nothing but a wetsuit, weights, and trained lungs. It moves from the island's volcanic origins and the jagged basalt coastline the haenyeo dive along, to the sumbisori, the sharp whistling breath they release the instant they surface. Inside, the museum keeps nets, weighted belts, a diver's house, and a shrine to the sea goddess the women prayed to before entering the water.
