Moerenuma Park

This guide to Moerenuma Park in Sapporo follows sculptor Isamu Noguchi's last project: a reclaimed Sapporo garbage dump he set out, in 1988, to reshape into a single landscape-scale artwork. It traces his sketches for a mountain rising from the mudflats, the plaster model finished just before his death that December, and the fountain the city eventually built to his design. You'll feel the odd, ancient pull of climbing the sloped grass of Play Mountain beside it.
