Ishiyama Green Space

This guide to Ishiyama Green Space asks why a young sculptor believed art could come out of a quarry that had produced nothing but building blocks since 1875. It follows Maruyama Takashi, a Hokkaido Education University teacher who joined four other sculptors as the group Cinq after the quarry closed in 1977, and traces their nine years turning the abandoned pit into a park that opened in 1996. Look closely at the exposed rock walls, cut back roughly three and a half meters, where rough industrial saw marks and deliberately carved curves sit side by side.
