Chiaia

This guide to Chiaia in Naples follows the last hours of Francesco Caracciolo, an admiral of the short-lived Neapolitan republic who stayed in the city rather than flee with his king. Captured trying to escape in disguise, he was handed to Horatio Nelson and tried within hours by a panel of royalist officers, with no real defense and no appeal. Historians still argue whether Nelson had any legal right to try a foreign officer at all, and whispers at the time pointed to his mistress, Emma Hamilton. The wide seafront road curling through Chiaia still carries the admiral's name.
