Basilica di Sant'Eustorgio's guide begins in a forest twenty-five kilometers north of Milan, on the sixth of April 1252, when two Dominican friars walking home from Como were ambushed and one, Peter of Verona, an inquisitor with plenty of enemies, was killed. Rome canonized him within the year, one of the fastest such decisions in church history, and his body came to rest here under an elaborate marble tomb carved by Giovanni di Balduccio.
