Montefiore Windmill

This guide to the Montefiore Windmill in Jerusalem opens in 1948, when a squad of British soldiers climbed the hill carrying demolition charges, orders in hand to level it. Sir Moses Montefiore had raised the mill ninety years earlier, with sails and machinery built in Kent and hauled here by camel, so Jerusalem's poor could grind their own flour. Look for the plaques bolted to the stone at the tower's base.
