Dohány Street Synagogue

This guide to the Dohány Street Synagogue in Budapest opens with Theodor Herzl, born in 1860 in an apartment overlooking its courtyard, decades before he would found the movement for a Jewish state. It follows that same courtyard through the winter of 1944-45, when the synagogue and surrounding streets became a sealed ghetto. Look for the metal willow tree at the back of the courtyard, and the plaque marking Herzl's birthplace nearby.
