Budapest Orthodox Synagogue

This guide to the Budapest Orthodox Synagogue follows a 1910 decision by the Orthodox community to overrule its own design jury and hand the building to brothers Sandor and Bela Loffler, who raised Hungary's only Art Nouveau synagogue in 1912 and 1913. It traces the Hebrew inscription across the facade, the stained glass by master craftsman Miksa Roth, and the damage the building took when this street fell inside the Pest ghetto in 1944. Look for the ritual bath tucked to the side of the complex.
