Callejón del Agua

This guide to the Callejón del Agua in Seville follows the maintenance corridor built into the city wall for the men who tended its water supply, tracing the pipes back to a spring near Alcalá de Guadaira and an aqueduct first attempted in Roman times, then rebuilt by the Almohad caliph Abu Yaqub Yusuf in 1171. It follows the water keepers who once walked here by torchlight, listening for a hiss in the stone. Look for the clay cylinders, atanores, still fitted into the wall beside you.
