Plaza Aliatar

This guide to Plaza Aliatar in Granada tells the story of the Nasrid general it's named for: a spice trader nicknamed al-Attar who rose to become steward of the Alhambra and father-in-law to the future sultan Boabdil by marrying off his teenage daughter Morayma. It follows him into old age, still defending the frontier town of Loja well into his seventies, and to the disastrous ride toward Lucena in 1483. The square today keeps a fountain, a snail bar, and a corner tower where legend says the Albaicin's last Muslims once met to plot a final rebellion.
