Centro José Guerrero

This guide to the Centro José Guerrero in Granada begins in the ravine outside the city where an unknown number of Civil War victims, possibly including the poet Federico García Lorca, were buried without a marked grave. It follows the painter José Guerrero, who grew up nearby and left for Madrid, Paris and then New York on Lorca's own urging, trading ideas there with Rothko, Kline and de Kooning as he abandoned representational painting after one last self-portrait in nineteen fifty. Fifteen years later he returned to Granada and walked into that same ravine with his wife and a Life magazine photographer.
