Abadía del Sacromonte

This guide to the Abadia del Sacromonte in Granada begins in 1595, when workers digging into Valparaiso hill broke into old Roman kilns and pulled twelve identities out of a pile of ash, based on lead tags that conveniently named each man in turn. Over the following decade, diggers kept returning and found twenty-two circular lead books inscribed in Arabic and Latin, with a gospel that flattered Granada's mixed Christian and Muslim community. Three of those twenty-two books have since vanished; nineteen still sit in the abbey's library.
