Strøget

This guide to Strøget in Copenhagen returns to November 17, 1962, when police lined the street to protect city planner Alfred Wassard from furious shopkeepers after he banned cars from where you're standing. It follows the merchants' threats, the honking protests from displaced drivers, and the shift by 1964 when the trial became permanent. Architect Jan Gehl began studying the street so closely his findings reshaped how cities everywhere think about walking.
